Legislation dictating harsher penalties for those who kill or injury police dogs and horse while they are on duty was adopted Tuesday by the state Assembly and Senate.

Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski, D-New City, was a main sponsor of the proposal in the Assembly.

State and local law enforcement agencies increasingly rely on these animals in crime solving, rescue and recovery operations. Under current law, killing a police animal is a misdemeanor.

The legislation passed by both houses on Tuesday would make harming the animals a felony, punishable by up to 4 years in prison, the highest penalty for killing an animal in the state.

“The role of police animals has significantly expanded over the past few years leading to increased use in investigations and apprehensions,” Zebrowski said in a statement “These animals provide protection, assistance and improve public safety.”

“State and local police invest a great deal of time and resources in the training of these extraordinary animals,” he said. “These animals are viewed and respected as ordinary police officers and we should begin to reflect that by increasing the penalty for killing them.”

The rest of the Zebrowski press release says:

Sen. George D. Maziarz, R-C, Newfane, also sponsored the proposed law that helps recognize the important roles these animals have in crime solving, rescue and recovery operations and other duties by creating a felony-level offense.

“Police animals do a remarkable job protecting and serving the citizens of this state,” Maziarz said in a statement released by Zebrowski’s office.

“In 2011, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office lost their K-9, Rocky, when he fell off a roof tracking clues regarding a robbery,” Maziarz said. The use of police animals is increasing and they continually undertake tasks that our own police officers do. It is time that we provide these animals the protection they deserve under the law when they are injured or die in the line of duty.”

In addition to the loss of Rocky, another high-profile death of a police animal came in March 2013 when Ape, a newly-trained FBI dog, was fatally shot as police searched for Kurt Myers – a suspect in the deaths of four people in Herkimer.

“The role of police animals has significantly expanded over the past few years leading to increased use in investigations and apprehensions,” Zebrowski said. “These animals provide protection, assistance and improve public safety. State and local police invest a great deal of time and resources in the training of these extraordinary animals. These animals are viewed and respected as ordinary police officers and we should begin to reflect that by increasing the penalty for killing them.”

Jose Ramirez, a student of Farley Elementary School in Stony Point, has been fighting brain cancer. Since his diagnosis, the school community and beyond came together as “Team Jose” to show their support for Jose and his family.

The local Wendy’s will donate 15 percent of all the sales during the Team Jose get together event to benefit the Ramirez family, who has been facing financial challenges because of expensive medical bills.

At the event, one of Farley Elementary teachers will dress up as Wendy.

WEST NYACK Clarkstown South senior Karly Fishkin (Fishkin (23) left, Brianna Keaveney (14) right: Photo credit Frank Beccera Jr./The Journal News)set the tone with two early RBI and the Vikings went on to defeat intradistrict rival Clarkstown North 7-2 at Clarkstown South on Senior Day Friday.

The Vikings won their second straight Conference IV League A title.

Fishkin drove in Briana Keaveney from third in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1. Fishkin repeated the feat — driving in Keaveney from third — Then she does it again in the third to put South (14-4, 8-0) ahead.

“I felt great hitting them,” Fishkin said. “It felt good to drive in those two runs to get it going.”

Vikings coach Maura Heebink is impressed with the way her shortstop has been playing all season.

“She hits the ball solidly and she’s a thinking batter,” Heebink said. “She really concentrates and focuses when she gets to the plate. If you are like that, then you as a coach can put them in when you want and they’ll become a clutch hitter like Karly is.”

Step one for the Vikings was to win the league again.

“We knew coming into the season that we had to work a little bit harder since we lost some key players,” Keaveney said (right, Photo credit Frank Beccera Jr./The Journal News). “Our team is able to pick up those key players and keep playing hard. It feels good to win the league.”

Nicole Ritsick went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs for the Vikings.

“I’ve been playing with (Rams pitcher Danielle) Borelli for a lot of years,” Ritsick said. “She’s a pretty good pitcher, so I pretty much went in very confident with my head in the game. I knew that it would be a good day.”

Heebink was impressed with Ritsick at the plate, but the coach said she believes Ritsick’s main value is in the field.

“There’s not a better defensive first baseman in Rockland County,” Heebink said. “She’s saved us so many times. She scoops the ball without hesitation. She hit very well and she’s a very good hitter but she’s the foundation of our infield.”

Keaveney picked up the win, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out 11. She also went 3 for 4 and scored three runs.

“I felt really confident,” Keaveney said. “I felt that my pitches were really working. I was throwing hard. I focused on hitting my spots.”

Sara Herskowitz, Gabby Palumbo, and Megan Atzl each drove in a run for the Vikings. Teammate Brianna Turchiarelli went 2 for 3.

Borelli, who took the loss, went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for the Rams (5-15). Stefanie Lomedico also drove in a run.

“We came out here to play,” Lomedico said. “We tried our best and we came out on the bottom.”

Here’s a look at the rest of the day in Section 1 softball:

– - – -
