Nyack NAACP President Frances Pratt and Regional Director Wilbur Aldridge have called for Congress to pass the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act, according to a statement released Wednesday.
“The VRAA would provide common sense solutions to prevent discrimination as it is occurring, an ability to review voting changes in place that have engaged in discrimination,” Pratt said at Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Nyack Branch, according to the statement.
Last June, the Supreme Court in Shelby County v. Holder invalidated a key section of the Voting Rights Act. The court invited Congress to revise the act to provide for protections against voting discrimination that reflect current circumstances.
