Spring Valley Village Trustee Vilair Fonvil is calling a special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Village Hall at 200 N. Main St., Spring Valley, to discuss the $825,000 payment to the county in relation to the village’s affordable housing development.
Fonvil said at the meeting, he wants to seek legal advice from the village’s special counsel so that officials can take proper actions to address the issue.
Fonvil said as a village trustee, he has the right to call a special meeting.
The issue turned up in a September 2012 audit by the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The audit concluded that the village had failed to report the $825,000 in income from the affordable housing development, known as Spring Valley Family Housing, at 94 N. Main St.
Getting directions from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Rockland County Office of Community Development is requesting the village to pay back the money.
The initial deadline for the payment was today. Though there’s been no payment from the village, Rockland County Attorney Thomas Humbach said the county was working with HUD and the village to come up with a solution.
