The Rockland County Bar Association offices will host an orientation session at 5 p.m. Dec. 10 for teacher-coaches interested in participating in the state’s annual High School Mock Trial Tournament for senior high school students.
The orientation will beheld at 337 N. Main St., Suite 1, New City. For more information, contact Leslie Ashby, Mock Trial coordinator, at the county bar association offices, 845-634-2149.
The annual tournament begins in the early winter with hundreds of high school teams throughout the state typically presenting cases in local tournaments. County winners then move on to regional competitions, and the winners compete in a semi-finals event each spring.
Nyack High School is the reigning state champion.
Seniors in the Rockland area may enter a team of at least eight students headed by one or more teacher-coaches. Other students can serve as back ups.
Junior high school students (grade 8 or below) are not eligible for this year’s tournament.
Involved are the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Citizenship Education and the New York Bar Foundation Rockland County Bar Association/Law-Related Education Program.
The New York Mock Trial High School Tournament has been administered by the Law, Youth and Citizenship Committee of the New York State Bar Association since 1982. It is one of the largest mock trial competitions in the country.
