Rockland County Legislature Chairwoman Harriet Cornell received the Rockland County Bar Association’s Liberty Bell Award today during the organization’s annual Law Day celebration at the Rockland County Courthouse.
The award is given each year to honor outstanding work by citizens within the local community who have given time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under laws set forth in the U.S. Constitution, according to a statement announcing the award.
“It is especially gratifying to me to receive this award based on this year’s theme: Realizing the Dream,” Cornell said. “To live in freedom, free to pursue our dreams, we depend upon the rule of law to ensure equality of opportunity for all. I am honored to receive this award for my work.”
Cornell was elected to her ninth consecutive term as chairwoman of the Legislature in January. She was first elected to the board in 1984 and is the only woman to serve as its permanent chair.
