The Catholic Community Services of Rockland will start its new initiative, “Produce the Produce,” which is to provide fresh vegetables and fruits for those people who are in need.
The organization will be celebrating the beginning of the initiative at noon Saturday at its facility at 78 Hudson Avenue, Haverstraw, with the blessing of the soil.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, only 25 percent of adults, and even fewer children, eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day.
The Catholic Community Services has produced more than 6,000 pounds of vegetables in 2012 at its garden, known as “Garden of Love,” and has successfully distributed them to those local families who are enrolled in the organization’s food pantry program.
The organization has since expended the garden, hoping to help our more people.
