Sloatsburg native Catherine Benincasa McAlevey, daughter of former Ramapo Supervisor John F. McAlevey, has died of breast cancer at age 57.
She helped her father in his bid to run against Rockland County Executive John Grant in the 1980s.
Catherine McAlevey served as an assistant district attorney in Rockland. She was later deputy commissioner of operations for New York City’s Human Resources Administration’s Department of Social Services until her retirement in 2010.
The Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 199 Bleeker St, New York, N.Y., is handling arrangements.
She is survived by her domestic partner, Debra Hall; her father and step-mother, John F. and Marlene McAlevey; an aunt, Sister Mary Janetta of Brooklyn; two sisters, Birgitta B. McAlevey of Sharon, Mass, and Jane McAlevey of San Francisco; four brothers, Peter C. McAlevey of Los Angeles, Benedict McAlevey of Jupiter, Fla., John B. McAlevey of Buffalo, and Thomas M. McAlevey of Stockholm, Sweden; two step-brothers, Mitchell J. Rotbert of Rockville, Maryland, and Clifford A. Rotbert, of New York; as well as 17 nieces and nephews.
