West Haverstraw escapes worst of Hurricane Sandy

West Haverstraw, particularly the Ganerivlle Arts and Industrial Center off Railroad Avenue, was slummed by Tropical Storm Irene last year.

Because Hurricane Sandy didn’t dump as much rain as Irene did, the village narrowly escaped this time, said Village Mayor John Ramundo.

Waterfront areas in West Haverstraw’s neighbors—the town of Stony Point and the village of Haverstraw—got flooded during the Hudson River’s high tide Monday night.

“We were very, very lucky, as far as GAGA goes,” Ramundo said, referring to the art nonprofit organization based in the Arts and Industrial Center.

GAGA, which has recently changed its name to GARNER, lost its main gallery when the center got flooded during Irene. The center and the art nonprofit are still in the middle of recovery from Irene.

Ramundo said many areas in West Haverstraw still out of power, including West Haverstraw Village Hall on Samsondale Avenue.

But the village hall will reopen for business at 8:30 a.m. Thursday by getting power from a generator, Ramundo said.
