The town of Ramapo and its Haitian Twinning Committee will host the first Haitian Heritage event tonight at 8 at Town Hall.

The event, which precedes the regularly scheduled Ramapo Town Board meeting, is free and open to the public.

The event will feature: a singer from Spring Valley High School; a dance group from Ramapo High School that will perform traditional Haitian dances; a performance by guitarist and recording artist Marc Mathelier; and recitations by Marie Love, a renowned Haitian poet. Two East Ramapo students who relocated to Ramapo after the devastating earthquake in Haiti will speak about their experiences and their hopes for a brighter future.

The program will conclude with a spread of free Haitian food, including chicken, rice, beans, desserts, and other cultural dishes. The food is donated by local restaurants in Ramapo.

The Twinning Committee was established in January and joins several other twinning committees that celebrate the heritage of other communities in Ramapo.
