After a service with 200 people the night before, the fire was lit and will burn continuously for 24 hours, in memory of those lost in war and as a symbolic beacon for those who never returned. Other watchfires in Rockland were observed at Bowline Park in Haverstraw, Clausland Mountain State Park in Orangetown and Eugene Levy Memorial Park in Ramapo.
