Ex-Sloatsburg Trustee Becky Kern Gets $200G Judgment Against Village and X-Building Inspector From Federal Court Jury

Posted by: Steve Lieberman - Posted in Uncategorized on May 17, 2010

Former Sloatsburg Trustee Becky Kern has won a $200,000 jury award from Sloatsburg and former Building Inspector John Layne.
The jury found that Layne retaliated against Kern by denying a certificate of occupancy in 2006 for a house she and her husband had been trying to sell on East Valley Road. Kern had been critical of Layne’s work as building inspector.
The jury provided its verdict on Thursday, awarding Kern $138,000 in economic damages and $12,000 in compensatory damages, as well as $50,000 in punitive damages against Layne, who was sued personally and as building inspector.
James Randazzo, who is Sloatsburg’ attorney in the case, said the village planned to appeal.
Kern’s lawyers — Michael Sussman and Christopher Watkins of Orange County — hailed the jury verdict as a victory for free speech and good government.
